How to Create Custom Names for Settings in EpsonScan

Many versions of EpsonScan by default do not allow you to create a custom descriptive name when you create/save a set of parameters within the software.  Thanks to a fellow Epson® scanner user known as “Big-H,” he found it is possible to manually change the description/name by editing the registry.

To make things easier for those who have never attempted changing the registry, I have developed the following basic directions to edit the registry.  These steps reference the appropriate steps for a computer running Windows XP Pro and should be similar for most recent versions of Windows, but there may be variances if you are using a different version of Windows.

WARNING - This method involves editing the registry.  It is a pretty simple process, but if you have any doubts DO NOT try it.  Proceed at your own risk!  It might help to print these instructions out so you can more easily follow them as you work.  (Please let me know if you find errors in this procedure!)

  1. Open EpsonScan in “Professional” mode and then create + save your custom software parameters under the generic Setting 1, Setting 2, etc.  Additionally, think of a short descriptive name and write a reference chart on a piece of paper so that you don’t get confused as to which generic name references which parameters during the procedures listed later in this tutorial  (e.g. Setting 1 = 4800 dpi and no ICE).

·          Make a note of one or more parameters for each custom setting.  For instance, note the dpi.  This will give you information that will help you double-check you are editing the correct entry when editing the registry.

  1. Now close the EpsonScan software.
  2. Open the registry editor:

·          From the Windows desktop, go Start > Run > then type regedit and hit enter.

  1. Backup your registry just to be safe and so that you have something from which you can restore your registry if things go bad:

·          In the main window area, click on “My Computer” at the very top of the registry tree.

·          Go File > Export, navigate to a directory where you will remember the file has been saved, name the file something like Registry Backup, and then click OK.

  1. Find the correct registry entry to edit by going to the top menu bar and going Edit > Find and search for the term Setting 1.  Be warned, it could take a while for your computer to complete the search.

·          On my computer with Windows XP Pro, the setting was found in a subdirectory of:  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\EPSON\EPSON Scan

·          BE CAREFUL – if you have installed EpsonScan multiple times or you have multiple versions installed (e.g. one for a 3200, one for a 4990, one for a V750, etc.), there will be multiple subdirectories, one for each scanner’s software installation.  Therefore, each installation’s directory can have a Settings 1, etc., in it.  In my case there were three subdirectories – ES0029, ES0034 and ES0063.  Make sure to only change the appropriate directory or directories)!

·          In my case, the actual subdirectory and entry for Setting 1 was: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\EPSON\EPSON Scan\ES0063\User Setting\User Setting 1

  1. Within the “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\EPSON\EPSON Scan\ESxxxx\User Setting\” directory, you should find a subdirectory for each set of parameters you created in step 1 of this procedure, plus an extra Setting 0 subdirectory.

·          Setting 0 seems to be the current set parameters for the software, so don’t modify it.

  1. Change the name for each set of parameters:

·          Click on one of the subdirectory folders (e.g. Setting 1 for the parameters you saved as Setting 1) in the left-hand pane of the regedit window.

·          In the right pane of the regedit window, find an entry/line approximately halfway down the pane with the label “name” (it will probably also have a red-lettered icon with “ab” in front of it).  The “data” column for this line entry should read Setting 1 or 2 or whatever.

·          Double-click on “name” and a new box will open.  Change the “value data” entry to whatever description you wish to appear for this set of parameters within EpsonScan, and then click OK.

·          Repeat this procedure for Setting 2, Setting 3, etc.

·          FYI – you can see there is an entry/line labeled “resolution.”  As I noted in step one, you can cross-reference the resolution parameter to the one you noted in your chart to help confirm you are changing the right set of entries.

  1. When you are finished changing each set of parameters, close the registry editor by going File > Exit
  2. Restart EpsonScan.  Check the dropdown box to see if your settings descriptions have changed.  If all went well, you should see your new custom descriptions!
