Does Removing the Glass on a Flatbed Really Make A Difference?

Many of us wonder whether removing the glass from the optical path of our flatbed scanners will produce superior film scans.  A few years ago I wondered the same thing, so I opened up my Epson 3200 and made a custom frame to fit it.  The frame suspended the Epson OEM film holder underneath its edges and had a large aperture in the center which removed all glass from the film scanning area (optical scanning path).  Here are the comparison examples.

The image on the left side was made with the glass bed still in the scanner and the image on the right was made after removing the glass.  Both scans were made at 3200 dpi and no post processing was done to the images (e.g. no unsharp masking, etc.).  These crops represent just a small portion of the image without any resampling but jpeg compression was at about 80% quality.
